Maternity photoshoots are one of my absolute favourite types of photography sessions. There's just something about capturing the beauty and joy of a woman during such a special time in her life that makes it incredibly fulfilling for me as a photographer. In this piece, I'll be sharing why I love photographing maternity photoshoots, and why I enjoy both studio and outdoor maternity shoots for different reasons.

Firstly, maternity photoshoots allow me to create memories that will last a lifetime. When a woman is pregnant, it's a unique and exciting time in her life that deserves to be documented. I love being able to capture the beauty and radiance of a pregnant woman in photographs, as well as the excitement and anticipation of becoming a mother. These photos will be cherished by the woman and her family for years to come, and I feel honoured to be able to capture such a special moment in time.

Now, let's talk about why I love both studio and outdoor maternity shoots. For studio maternity shoots, I love the controlled environment and the ability to manipulate lighting to create stunning, dramatic images. I can create a more intimate setting that allows the woman to feel comfortable and relaxed, which is especially important when she's in the later stages of pregnancy. I can also experiment with different backdrops and props to create a variety of looks that suit the woman's personal style. I run all studio shoots out of my home studio in Edwardstown, South Australia.

On the other hand, I love outdoor maternity shoots for the natural beauty and variety that they offer. Being outdoors allows me to take advantage of natural light and create stunning, ethereal images that showcase the woman's connection to nature. It also allows for more creativity in terms of posing and framing, as we can use the environment around us to create unique and interesting shots. Outdoor maternity shoots are especially beautiful during sunrise or sunset when the light is soft and golden.

Maternity photoshoots are a wonderful way to document this special time in a woman's life. As a photographer, I feel incredibly grateful to be able to capture these moments and create memories that will last a lifetime. Both studio and outdoor maternity shoots offer their unique advantages, and I love being able to switch between the two to create a diverse portfolio for my clients.

Checklist of things to consider for your maternity shoot:

Outfit choices: The best outfits for the shoot should be comfortable and showcase that beautiful baby bump! I have a range of dresses to choose from, but you are also welcome to bring and wear any outfits that you would like to include in the shoot.

If your partner or older children are included in the shoot, I recommend bringing a few different outfits, aiming for neutral colours and we them complimenting your outfit. I also have a range of dresses for little girls that we can use.

Styling Having makeup and hair styling can help you look and feel your best for their photos, whether it be self styled or styled by a professional.

If you are looking to have a professional, I can highly recommend the following local businesses:

If you are wanting to style yourself (which most clients opt to do), Pinterest is a great resources for inspiration!

Location:  Consider whether they would prefer to have the shoot in studio or outdoors, I can am so happy to offer both.

All studio shoots take place in my studio in Edwardstown, South Australia. Outdoor shoots can take place in a variety of different locations, including:

Blackwood Forest

Adelaide Botanic Gardens

Mount Lofty Botanic Gardens

Belair National Park

Veale Gardens

Himeji Gardens

A variety of beaches across the state

Props and accessories: You are more than welcome to bring along props or accessories that are meaningful to them or that they'd like to incorporate into their photoshoot. This could be anything from baby shoes or a favourite book to flowers or a special piece of jewellery.

Timing: Maternity shoots take place between 32 - 37 weeks of pregnancy, when that bump is beautifully round and Mama to be has that gorgeous natural glow about her!

For studio sessions I tend to host them in the mornings, whereas Outdoor sessions are best held an hour before sunset to capture the beautiful gold light.

I can advise on what time would be best at time of booking, based on whether the shoot is in studio or outdoor.

Have fun!: I know the prospect of a photoshoot and having photos taken can be daunting, but I promise I will help you to feel at ease and enjoy the moment. I have had very positive feedback about my sessions being fun and enjoyable, feel free to check out my reviews on my Facebook page here.

Considering a doula?

As a maternity and newborn photographer I have some lovely Doula's in my time. Doula's can provide additional support on your journey to becoming a mother, through pregnancy and birth as well as post-partum.

Research has found that people who have the continuous support of a doula during childbirth experience:

• 39% reduction in the risk of C-section

• 41 minutes reduced labour time

• 15% increase in the chance of a spontaneous vaginal birth

Studies show that postpartum doula support can help in many ways including:

• reducing the risk of postpartum mood disorders

• improve success with breastfeeding

If you are considering having a Doula to support you I would highly recommend Brooke from Doula Bright Beginnings. Brooke is one of the kindest people you could ever meet and has a very calming presence, perfect when you need support the most.
