How to Prepare Your Baby for a Newborn Shoot: A Complete Guide
Congratulations on the arrival of your precious little one! A newborn photoshoot is a wonderful way to capture the fleeting moments of your baby's early days. To ensure everything goes smoothly and you get the best possible photos, a bit of preparation is key. Here's a comprehensive guide on how to prepare your baby (and yourself!) before coming to a newborn shoot.
Before your Session
What to Pack
**Nappies, Wipes, and Creams**
The session can last up to four hours, so pack enough nappies, wipes, and any creams you might need to cover this time period. It’s always better to have a bit more than you think you’ll need.
**Dummy**
If your baby uses a dummy, bring it along. It can be incredibly helpful for settling your baby during changes and wrapping.
**Snacks**
Feel free to bring snacks and drinks for yourself. Keeping fed and hydrated is important, especially over a potentially long session. A well-fed parent is a happy parent!
**Entertainment for Siblings**
If older siblings are coming along, pack some food and entertainment for them. Toys, books, or an iPad can keep them busy until it’s their turn in front of the camera. Happy siblings make for a more relaxed shoot!
Preparations for your baby - The Morning of Your Session
**Keep Your Baby Awake**
This one is really important - try to keep your baby awake for 1-2 hours before the session. This helps them fall into a deep sleep in the car, making them more cooperative and sleepy for the shoot.
**Feed Your Baby Before You Leave**
Feed your baby about half an hour before you leave for the studio, and ensure they are well-winded. A milk-sleepy baby often means a smoother session. If your baby is still awake when you arrive, we can do a top-up feed before starting – we’ll play it by ear.
**What to dress Baby in**
Just before you leave for the studio, change your baby into a fresh nappy, preferably the smallest size possible to avoid bulkiness under the wrap. Dress them in a loose-fitting onesie with buttons. This makes it easier to undress and wrap them without disturbing their sleep too much.

What to Wear - Parents and Siblings
**Firstly - Be Part of the Photos**
You are welcome to be in a few photos. I know most mums may not be feeling like supermodels quite yet, but getting in the photos with your infant will create lasting memories you’ll both treasure. Equally, if you are 100% sure you don't want to be in the photos then I won't pressure you :).
**Wear Neutral Colours**
Choose mild tones and soft hues for intimate portraits. Neutral colours help keep the focus on your baby and create a timeless look.
**Avoid Chunky Jewellery and Watches**
Chunky jewellery and watches can be distracting elements and might look dated in a few years. Aim for a timeless look that will remain a staple in your home for decades to come.
Session flow
Once your baby is settled, we start with poses of baby by themselves. This will include wraps, baskets, close-ups of hands, feet, and other details—whatever captures those tiny features best! After we’ve taken all the individual shots, we will then move onto family posing with mum, dad, and older siblings if relevant. Since the sessions can take a while, you’re welcome to bring the older sibling along later in the session if easier. Either way works for me.
Final Thoughts
A newborn photoshoot is a special occasion, and a little preparation can go a long way in ensuring it’s a wonderful experience. By packing the essentials, keeping your baby’s schedule in mind, and planning ahead, you'll set the stage for a relaxed and memorable session.
