Colour VS Black and White - The Great Photographer Debate

As a photographer, I am often asked whether I prefer to create images in colour or black and white. The truth is, I love both! Each has its own unique qualities and can convey a different mood and emotion.

Let's start with colour photography. I absolutely love the vibrancy and richness that colour can bring to an image. The way that different hues can complement or contrast with each other creates a beautiful and dynamic visual experience. I particularly love to play with strong contrasts in colour photography, whether it's capturing the bright blues of a sunny sky against a white dress, or the deep reds of autumn leaves against a neutral background. These contrasts can make the subject stand out even more and create a striking and memorable image.

That being said, there are also moments where black and white photography is the perfect choice. Black and white photography can add a timeless and classic quality to an image, and can also create a sense of drama and intensity. Without colour, the focus is on the textures, shapes, and contrasts within the image. This can be particularly effective in capturing raw emotions, such as the joy and excitement of a family playing together or the tenderness of a mother holding her newborn baby.

Ultimately, the decision to edit in colour or black and white depends on the individual moment and the story that I want to tell. Sometimes, a moment is best captured in full colour to convey the vibrant energy of the scene. Other times, black and white can add a depth and emotion to the image that colour cannot. In the end, what is most important to me is capturing the essence of the moment and creating a photograph that will be cherished for years to come.

I will always provide a mix of colour and black and white images in all of my galleries, whether it be for outdoor shoots around Adelaide or in my Edwardstown Studio. So you could always select a mix of both when you select your images 🙂
